Magnetic Field due to Solenoid

Concept Explanation

Magnetic Field Due To A Solenoid

A long insulated wire is tightly wound in the shape of a spring, with closely spaced turns that lie side by side, is known as a solenoid The figure below shows a solenoid. The difference between a  solenoid and a circular coil is the fact that the length of the solenoid is much greater than its diameter.

When a current enters a solenoid at one end, it passes through each turn before coming out at the other end. Each turn acts as a circular coil and will produces its own magnetic field. The figure below shows a few turns of a solenoid. We can observe that the net magnetic field as represented by the magnetic field lines is similar to that of a bar magnet.

Actually, a current-carrying solenoid behaves like a bar magnet of the same shape. The magnetic field inside a long current-carrying solenoid is nearly uniform and is parallel to the axis of the solenoid. It also has opposite poles at its ends. The intensity of magnetic field depend on the following factors

1. The intensity depends on the number of turns in the coil per unit length. The more the number of turns of wire around the core the more will be the magnetic effect.

2. The intensity depends on the amount of current flowing in the solenoid. More is the current more will be the intensity of magnetic field.
